UK Secondhand Lions [2003]
US Secondhand Lions (New Line Platinum Series)
Excellent film. Thought the storyline would be difficult to put over but the characters were involving and well casted.
The ending is a bit fairytailish but by that time you just want the best for everyone and wish the film could be longer.

UK Callan - Series 1 - Part 2 Of 3 -...
UK Callan - Series 1 - Part 3 Of 3 -...
Old UK T.V. series. These are the colour episodes not the first black and white ones.
If you are familiar with Callan then you will want to see the episodes again, if not then you are in for a treat.
Note that these are the colour itv episodes which followed the original bbc series
The third volume is nowhere near as strong as the previous two - especially the last episode but this is interesting as something that could not be made today.
They are obviously low budget but this doesn't detract from teh quality of the program.
The series was unusual in that the main character wasn't successful or at all happy and very few of the characters had any redeeming features.
In the employ of the secret services he is lonely, unhappy about his work and never going to escape; surrounded by people more unemotional and self centred.
Callan always trapped into fulfilling the needs of his employers against his will

The Human Stain [2004]
OK ish. Didn't really enagage me at all.
The basic storyline wasn't very believable and the characters were fairly plastic.
Was reasonably acted and paced but no real plot.
There was a final incident shown at the begining.
The life of the people involved leading up to the incident.
The adolescence of one of the people showing how ironic his later life was.
Not really believable and left with a feeling of "who cares".
In all some rich characters that weren't really developed.

Along Came Polly [2004]
Shame. I like Jennifer Aniston but this film has very little to recomend it.
The supporting characters are more interesting than the stars who have very little chemistry.

Win A Date With Tad Hamilton!
Stupid plot. Childish storyline. You have to be desperate to watch a film like this.
Well surprise, surprise. They pull it off.
A few dubious moments but in all a worthwhile film, well scripted and acted.
Nothing very deep but entertaining and engaging. You can't ask for much more than that.

Dogville [2004]
At the begining I thought "oh no what on earth is this" but it soon beomes engaging and you forget about the odd presentation.
I'm not a big fan of Nicole Kidman but in this film she shows her ability.
It's meant to be political but seems to me to be about people - ok it's not about nice people and the point seems to be that any niceness is superficial.
"There's no such thing as altruism"? Wonder what Richard Dawkins thinks of it.
Fine extras too - but do they show that the film wasn't just about expression but was a little bit about profit too?

The Ladykillers [2004]
Stay away.
Took me several sittings to watch it all the way through and it didn't get any better.
None of the characters looked comfortable in the parts. No pace to the film.
I normally like Coen brothers and Tom Hanks films but this is a lemon.
Watch this instead. If it's too late then watch it as well and see what the film could have been
The Ladykillers [1955]

Starsky & Hutch -- The Movie [2004]
Loses it's way a bit.
Seems to be more a collection of set pieces strung together.
Mildly entertaining I suppose but the lead characters never seem to get into their roles.
Snoopy Dog as Huggy Bear is the only exception and worth viewing.

Fahrenheit 9/11 [2004]
The beginning is good stuff, discussing Bush's first election (the one he lost?).
Loses it's way towards the end which rather diminishes the impact of the film.
On the whole not really convincing and I supect the Palme d'Or was a sympathy prize due to the distribution difficulties.
But it's an important film and should be seen.

The Butterfly Effect [2004]
Nicely made. Watch the directors cut, haven't seen the theatrical version but it's sounds very dubious.
Pacing is maybe a bit slow in places but the characters are nicely developed.

The Bourne Supremacy [2004]
The script is fine and the acting accomplished but the camerawork and cutting makes it almost unwatchable.
It's not just that no shot lasts more than 2-4 seconds (reminiscent of a Queen video) but the use of steady (and not steady) cam often doesn't fit with the scene.
Add that to the dubious focus and lighting and it's a bit of a mess.
A shame given that the Bourne Identity was one of my favourite films.
I notice that The Bourne Ultimatum has been announced with the same director - please no!
